How to get rid of bats in house siding

Bats might not be in your attic, chimney or crawl spaces, it’s possible for them to take up residence behind your siding or shutters.

While physical barriers will keep bats from entering your home, some items repel them. Bats don’t like the smell of mothballs, white phenol, cinnamon, or eucalyptus

Getting rid of bats behind shutters

If you have shutters on your home and bats choose to live behind them, you might not even notice them.  Shutters can become lose over time and can be off an inch or two and be unnoticeable from far away.  Shutters should be checked and adjusted twice a year to make sure they are tight against the siding but also to prevent any damage that may occur from a storm.

Bats and Lights

Bats hate light.  Many homes have exterior lighting that lights up homes façade at nights, these lights are great as they shine toward the attic and discourage bats from entrance points on this side of the home.  The downside to this method is that light also attracts bugs.  There have been many opinions of this as an effective deterrent over the years, but can be used with other methods as natural sprays and electronic devices.

Bats also don’t like objects that reflect light, aluminum foil, mirrors, mylar balloons, or CDs will do a great job of reflecting light, the downside to this as it could look tacky on the exterior of your home.  Curb appeal might win the battle over a DIY bat deterrent strategy.

It is important to mention that in Connecticut, it is illegal to kill bats, the only forms of control is relocation and deterrence.  If you are unable to peacefully remove bats from near your home it is recommended that you call in a professional bat removal company that can legally take care of all your bat problems.  Gray Brothers is happy to help, please call us today if you are experiencing any bat problems.
